Planning your road trip is fun and exciting! You’ve packed your favorite snacks, and you’re blasting out your favorite songs. And if you’re like most of us, then you probably sing along at the top of your lungs as well!  But do you know there is one thing that’s not fun about a road trip?  Needing to use the restroom when there isn’t one around for miles.  Some people would be tempted to stop the car, and do the “pop and squat,” that is pop the car doors and squat alongside the road.  It’s not a great idea, but then again, bladder leakage isn’t a great idea either.  There are many reasons why you should avoid the “pop and squat,” but here’s the top four:

  1. Undignified and Embarrassing

Finding yourself in an emergency urination situation can be more than a little stressful. But it can be even more stressful when you pop the car doors and squat alongside the road, not to mention it can be embarrassing and a little undignified.  In pretty much every female restroom, you’ll find stalls with doors because women and girls value privacy.  Popping the car doors and squatting on the side of the road just does not provide privacy.

  1. Wildlife Encounters

You may have noticed that there’s a significant number of animals, insects and birds that live along the roadside.  When you stop to urinate on the roadside, you’ve entered their territory. And some animals don’t react kindly to this.  Depending on where you are, there could be severe consequences. The alligators in Florida don’t usually enjoy having people enter their habitats, and insects, like fire ants, often take people as threats.  And because there’s a lot of food dropped along roadsides, ants live there in abundance.  The ant bite is exceptionally painful, and they can be hard to see, especially when one is distracted by the need to pee.

  1. Potential Social Media Exposure

We’ve all been on social media and have seen the viral videos of people caught in compromising or emergency situations.  The last thing anybody wants is to have their emergency urination situation recorded and uploaded for the world to see.  If this happens, there’s little you can do about it, because in most states, you can be recorded outside as you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.

  1. Illegal

This is probably the most important reason why it’s a bad idea to urinate along the roadside: in most states, it is illegal.  You could be arrested and charged with public urination.
