Dehydration, know the risks.  Urinary incontinence is an all-around inconvenience that women try their best to avoid, especially during social occasions or when they know they have to drive. Needing to run to and from the bathroom can be embarrassing and a hindrance depending on the setting of the social event or how many minutes you’re stuck in a vehicle. It’s no wonder why I have heard so many women admit that they reduce or eliminate their water intake on purpose to avoid the constant back and forth that stems from needing to urinate after having consumed liquids. However, what these women don’t know is that limiting their water intake can affect their health.

Dehydration Can Affect Your Kidney Function:  Kidneys play an essential role in our body’s filtration system. Without the necessary water intake, our kidneys cannot adequately filter the waste from our blood and excrete it into urine. Water plays an essential role in diluting the calcium, oxalate and uric acid in our bodies, and without water, these substances can build up and create the painful nuisance we know as kidney stones. Staying hydrated can help you avoid getting kidney stones and can also prevent urinary tract infections.

Dehydration Can Affect Your Heart:  When water intake goes down, it lowers our natural blood volume and makes it a thicker and more condensed consistency. With a reduced blood volume, our hearts must work harder to pump the same amount of blood and get enough oxygen to our cells. This can put extraneous strain on our hearts and can ultimately weaken it. The lack of water, or the increased amounts of non-aqueous liquids, can increase the chances of heart disease.

Dehydration Can Affect Your Immune System: We’ve all heard that it is essential to increase fluids when sick. This advice is given because the lack of water makes our bodies more susceptible to sicknesses, like the flu. Without adequate hydration, our bodies cannot excrete the toxins and waste materials that negatively affect our health. Dehydration can also affect energy levels and the ability to sleep, which also weakens the immune system.
